Details and Behind the Scenes
Brooke is a lover of the beach and vacations there frequently with her family. One of their favorite places to eat while at the beach is Playa Bowls - a restaurant that uses fruits, vegetables, and other fresh ingredients to create smoothie bowls that are equally beautiful as they are healthy. Carlisle, PA is a small college town that is growing quickly in its variety of niche foods and craft cocktails and it seemed like the natural place for such a wonderfully fun new franchise.
The building Brooke bought was once a men’s clothing store and tailor. The uneven floors were worn from years of use, the walls were lined with hanging racks and mirrored finishes, and the ceiling, being so tall, had been left uneven, water-stained, and rather unattractive. The mechanicals all needed to be revamped, the access to the basement was from the exterior of the brick building and to make matters slightly more complicated, there are two apartments upstairs from the new commercial renovation - both of which housed existing tenants with electrical and water hookups that were reliant on the downstairs operations.
Creative stripped the interior of the retail locations of all its finishes and revealed several issues - she needed a new roof, a new set of stairs into the basement, the hot water heater needed to be moved, the floors were badly damaged and uneven and the rafters above the showroom were rotting.
With the design of the interior space being managed by the franchise, the exterior of the building was left to the design team of Creative Building Concepts. Creative has renovated several local historical properties with great success and has developed a respected name for themselves within the community. The exterior of the building is protected by the local Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB) and the new design needed to pass the specific requirements of downtown Carlisle.
It was important to the design team, the client, and to HARB that each of the needs is met: both keeping on pace with the vibe and feel of the restaurant AND the needs and requirements of historical nature. With only a slight modification to the lighting of the sign above the front door, the proposal was passed and the bright new storefront caught the eyes of many interested patrons!
Playa Bowls has been oped since mid-August and nurturing a bustling business within the comfort of their newly renovated space, complete with all new flooring systems, HVAC, and electrical. New bathrooms, storage, basement access from inside, a fully functional kitchen, a fireplace in the restaurant, and a beautiful new patio on the back, complete with firepits, draped patio string lights, and a perfectly beachy vibe!
